Gowanus Canal Sponge Park

We are working on a design for the Gowanus Sponge Park (or “smart park”) which would involve developing street ends into publicly usable areas and creating a public esplanade on both sides of the Gowanus Canal. This design would give the canal’s banks new life by granting the community access to the canal in a way it has not had before. It would also lessen the current environmental problems by including a water retention and filtration system which would decrease the polluted water which currently dumps into the canal.

In April of 2008, we held several meetings to introduce the community, elected officials, and various government agencies to the Sponge Park plan. Response was overwhelming and the project has the support of the NYC Departments of Parks & Recreation, Design and Construction, Transportation, and the US Environmental Protection Agency and US Army Corps of Engineers, among other agencies and community groups. The award-winning plan was also selected by the New York Chapters of the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architects for inclusion in their exhibition, Ecotones.  The project has now received funds towards construction of two initial sections of the park from City Council Member David Yassky (to be administered by the Parks Department) and through Representative Nydia Velazquez as part of the fiscal year 2010 Interior and Environment Bill. The latter funds are through a US Environmental Protection Agency STAG grant and have been matched in part by a grant from Con Edison.  The Conservancy is seeking remaining funding to move the project forward.  To support this project, please contact our Executive Director at 718 541-4378 or email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
