Development Director

The Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is a community-based non-profit organization that serves as the environmental steward for the Gowanus Canal Watershed. We are growing quickly to meet the environmental planning and advocacy needs in the neighborhood, and are looking to hire our first Development Director to oversee and grow a comprehensive fundraising strategy that will expand revenue streams and build greater public awareness of our mission and vision. This position will report to the Executive Director, and work in partnership with the ED, as well as collaborate with Board, staff and dedicated volunteers, to streamline, institutionalize and grow our fundraising programs and capacity. The ideal candidate is creative, pro-active, detail oriented and an excellent communicator, with a demonstrated interest in urban environmental issues, the Gowanus neighborhood, and/or community-based education, stewardship and design advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee and Implement Individual Giving strategy

  • Work with Board and staff to develop and launch an individual-giving program
  • Manage relationships with individual donors
  • Work with staff to improve and streamline tracking and data management in Salesforce
  • Work with staff to grow Membership program, including designing incentives and developing goals and metrics

Oversee and Implement Foundation, Corporate and Government Giving strategy

  • Research and organize funding opportunities
  • Work with program staff to develop funding proposals, and coordinate grant tracking and reporting
  • Work with Volunteer program staff to expand Corporate Clean & Green program

Oversee event programming and logistics

  • Work with Board and staff to secure event sponsorship and increase ticket sales
  • Manage event planning consultants
  • Oversee Fundraising Events

Skills Needed

3-7 years comparable nonprofit development experience, with demonstrated success in fundraising

Bachelors degree

Excellent interpersonal and project management skills

Strong communication skills, including writing, editing and social media

Working knowledge of Salesforce (or other donor databases)

Experience working with outside consultants and vendors

Salary

Depends on experience - Benefits include 50% Health Insurance, Simple IRA, and flexible time off
